As a Christian, I like to look for great spiritual messages in popular culture. Often times they are few and far between, but for that reason when I find one, it is usually special and stays with me over time. I found one of my favorite prayers in an action movie about vikings of all things! The movie is the “13th Warrior” starring Antonio Banderas. The prayer is offered up by Antonio before the final battle when the outcome looks less than hopeful. The crux of the prayer is as follows…
“For all the things we ought to have thought and have not thought; all we ought to have said and have not said; all we ought to have done and have not done … I pray thee, God, for forgiveness.”
Wow! Nice huh? We thank God for blessings, and we pray for forgiveness for bad things we did, and we pray for what we want, and we pray for healing; but how often do we remember to acknowledge the many things we just overlooked that we should have been doing? Not only did we not give them a second thought, we didn’t even give them a first thought! We were too busy focused on what we wanted and what our goals and needs and hopes and dreams were that we forgot what we “ought” to be doing for God. Who guessed Antonio Banderas would illuminate the things I failed to consider? Thank you for reading my blog.
